Krystyna of Spring Mountain Living is a city girl turned country girl like me.  Most of us just didn’t grow up with all this homesteady stuff and that’s why getting to know each other and freely exchanging ideas and experience within the homesteading community is so important.  I’m grateful to all the homestead minded parents I’ve interviewed so far for their wisdom and willingness to share.  Read on to learn more about how Spring Mountain Living gets it done!  Fun fact about Krystyna – she’s a Marine Corps veteran and everyone here at Homestead Lady thanks her for her service.  On to our Healthy Whole Mom Interview with Spring Mountain Living…

Tell us a little bit about the make up of your personal background and your family? Kids? Kids still at home?

Healthy Whole Mom Interview with Spring Mountain Living - www.homesteadlady.comWe’re a small, homeschooling family of four – myself, hubby and two boys, ages 8 & 10. We live on an old, 80 acre farm in the UP (Upper Peninsula), where we spend our days raising animals,  fixing up the homestead and sorting through all the treasure and trash left behind on the farm by the previous owners.

One of our mom/dad jobs is keeping everyone healthy and fed.  What methods or tools do you use to accomplish that in your home? Well, ok – list your top five favorites.

With a lot (I mean a LOT) of food allergies, the number one way that we keep the family fed & healthy is to cook from scratch.  There was a bit of a learning curve when we initally started, especially with the plethora of allergies we have between the four of us.   Now that we’re used to it, it’s easy-peasy.  We’re also fortunate have our own farm, where we raise our food and spend time foraging and hunting for food  to add to our pantry supply.

Healthy Whole Mom Interview with Spring Mountain Living - www.homesteadlady.comWhat’s the one thing you’d wished you’d know when you were starting your family?  What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a brand new mom or dad?

I wish I’d known how little real food ingredients were found on grocery store isles.  Many pre-packaged foods tricked me into thinking they were healthy and wholesome, when in fact they were just the opposite.  I’d tell new parents to be vigilant about reading labels and getting to know all the different names that unhealthy and processed ingredients hide behind.  As a general rule, when shopping at the store, if I can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is, I don’t buy it!

Ok, recipe time! From food to herbs to oils to juices, lay it on us. We want to know what’s in your Healthy Whole Mom/Dad toolbox!

Healthy Whole Mom Interview with Spring Mountain Living - www.homesteadlady.com - buckwheat pancakes!Who doesn’t love pancakes?  It’s one of our favorite & easy to make recipes, and so easy to change ingredients based on what you have on hand.  And the best part?  It can be made without any of our allergens since it’s gluten, dairy, egg & even sugar free!  http://springmountainliving.com/make-your-own-homemade-buckwheat-pancake-bread/

  1. It’s always nice to get to know you more, Krystyna! I can’t imagine having to figure out how to cook with so many allergies, but you do what you have to do!

  2. Where in the U.P.? I moved from downstate E. Lansing area to the U.P. about 8 years ago. Purchased the property about 10 years ago. Love it up here (except for this extremely cold winter). I live halfway between Escanaba and Marquette. If you know where Trenary is, I live 4-1/2 miles north of that.

  3. It is great to read about your progress overcoming allergies and finding healthy foods. I will check out your recipe for buckwheat pancakes. The U.P. has a special place in my heart–my mom & dad grew up in the U.P. and we spend some time there every summer.
