No need to spend money on earth-friendly confetti for New Years, weddings, and birthdays. Learn to make your own with these homemade biodegradable confetti instructions. There are several different methods to choose from in this article, including fabric, paper, and even herbs.
We don’t do a lot in our family when it comes to New Year’s celebrations, but we do LOVE confetti!
Birthdays, Chinese New Year, and even Easter feature some sort of confetti throwing at our house. You may have noticed, though, that most confetti contains metal or plastic, which poses a problem if you’d like to make your holidays more earth-friendly.
Homemade Biodegradable Confetti
If you learn to make your own confetti from materials that easily breakdown, you can toss it all you like without worry.
Most of our homemade confetti comes from leftover materials we have lying around from the various natural crafts we enjoy throughout the year. You probably have a lot of these materials laying around your house, too.
This is one holiday craft you can make easily, without a lot of fuss or equipment. Sit down and make it today with the kids!
Biodegradable Confetti from Cloth
Anyone have a fabric stash?
During the year, we work on crafts that involve scrap fabric like these burlap and fabric produce basket bags that I keep in the sewing room. I use them to gather up the bits of fabric and ribbon that litter the craft room.
It’s fun to watch the stash build up as the year goes by and know that I’m not wasting any of it. These bits and bobs become cloth confetti with little to no effort.
To Make the Cloth Confetti
Here’s a super simple tutorial to make your own cloth confetti.
Biodegradable Confetti from Paper
If you have a hole-punch, you can make this homemade biodegradable confetti. Yes, you can buy paper confetti in the store, but I save up our paper scraps through the year. We usually make our own paper once a year for holidays and projects and we always end up with scraps.
For example, the holiday paper we make typically gets cut up into cards or ornaments. Here’s homemade paper Valentine’s Day mobile we made last year.
We had lots of pink paper scraps leftover and, believe you me, when you make the paper from scratch and by hand, you do NOT want to waste even a piece. These scraps immediately went into our homemade confetti stash!
I could go buy paper confetti, but if I’m trying to reduce cost and waste then this is a simple way to do it. Besides, this is a simple task that the children can manage without a lot of input from me.
It helps the kids be conscious of what they’re tossing out during the year. Activities like these prompt us to look at what we’re preparing to throw away and ask, “Is there something more that can be done with this?”
Herbal Biodegradable Confetti
I harvest and preserve herbs all throughout the growing season for home health, cosmetics, delicious meals, and other homestead-produced items.
For example, I grow a lot of calendula – lots and lots! So much so that I end up with extra petals in my stash. They’re great to incorporate in homemade paper and even herbal fire starters.
However, leftover herbs make fantastic biodegradable confetti! You don’t have to limit yourself to dried petals, you can incorporate fragrant herbs like mint and lemon balm, too.
Herbal confetti is particularly suited to farm weddings and woodland tea parties! The mix below includes:
- Rose petals
- Calendula petals
- Dried pomegranate skin (which makes a fabulous natural dye, by the way)
- Rugosa rose hips
- Field daisies
- Lemon balm
- Mint
